Samsung and Motorola Customers: Important Info Re: 511

Sprint has learned that a feature setting on certain Samsung and Motorola phones may affect your ability to dial some abbreviated dialing codes such as 211, 311, 511, 711 and 811.

NOTE: 911 (Emergency Services) and 411 (Directory Assistance) are not affected by this issue and can be dialed without taking the steps outlined below. In addition, 711 (Telecommunications Relay Service) is not affected on the Motorola ic502 or ic402 phones.

Below is information on how to resolve this issue so that you may dial these important abbreviated dialing codes on your Sprint or Nextel phone.

Abbreviated dialing codes or N11 codes provide access to information as follows:

• 211 - Community Information and Referral Services (available in some parts of the country for access to organizations like the United Way)
• 311 - Non-Emergency Police and Other Government Services (available in some areas of the country)
• 511 - Traffic and Transportation Information (available in some areas of the country for travel information services)
• 711 - Telecommunications Relay Services (available in all areas of the country for access to TTY/TDD and other communications services for the deaf, hard of hearing and speech-impaired)
• 811 - One Call Services (available in some areas of the country for access to notification systems to help prevent damage to underground utilities)

Phones that give a busy signal, silence when connected or an audible network response when dialing an abbreviated dialing code are NOT necessarily affected by this issue.

Which phones are impacted?

• Samsung models: MM-A900, SPH-N200, SPH-N400, VI-660, VM-A680, MM-A700, PM-A740, RL-A760, IP-A790, MM-A800, VI-A820, PM-A840 and MM-A880
• Motorola models: Motorola ic402 (Blend) and ic502 (Buzz).

Information for Samsung phones:
A software maintenance release is available for the Samsung MM-A900 that resolves the N11 dialing issue. To obtain this maintenance release, please take your phone to your local Sprint store.

If you have a different Samsung phone model or chose not to update your MM-A900 software, please follow these steps to dial N11:

1. Enter the abbreviated dialing code (for example, press 5-1-1 on your keypad);
2. Instead of pressing the TALK key, press the Option "soft" key on the upper right corner of the keypad. (If your phone does not have the Option "soft" key, press the Menu key);
3. On the option screen, select Dial to place your call.

Alternatively, you may program these abbreviated dialing codes into your phone's contacts list:

1. In your phone's menu, select "Contacts";
2. Select Add New or Add Contact;
3. Enter the abbreviated dialing code as the Number;
4. Assign the abbreviated dialing code a Name (e.g., "Traffic Info" for 511);
5. Save the new Contact entry.

After an abbreviated dialing code has been added to your Contacts list, you should be able to dial the code as you would any number.

Information for Motorola Blend (ic402) or Buzz (ic502) phones:

Update software on your Motorola Blend or Buzz phone to dial N11 numbers:

1. From the standby screen, press Menu/OK key
2. In your phone's Menu select Tools
3. Select Phone Update
4. At this point, the phone will compare your phone?s software version to the latest software version. If your phone is not up to date, the phone will ask you to continue the process.
5. Follow the prompts to install the update.

NOTE: Sprint encourages you to update your phone software periodically. If you receive a text message from Sprint prompting you to accept a software update, please accept it. If you have already updated the software, the phone will inform you that you have the latest software version. Otherwise, the phone will notify you that the update is available. Follow the prompts to install the update.

Alternately, you may deactivate the "Speed Dial" feature in order to dial N11 numbers by using these steps:

1. From the standby screen, press Menu/OK key
2. In your phone's Menu select Settings
3. Select Others
4. Select Speed Dial
5. Select Off
6. Press Menu/OK key
